A Night in the Temple Town
My grandmother grew up in Rameshwaram, a sacred temple town. Our family was one of the families responsible for performing the main Pooja in the temple, and she had spent her entire life surrounded by devotion, rituals, and spirituality.
One evening, as she was returning from the Chatram (the temple boundary area), she decided to rest for a while before heading home. She sat there in silence, unaware that something unseen had followed her.

An Unseen Presence
Upon reaching home, she sat in the bramda (veranda) in front of our house, taking a moment to relax. The night air was cool, the temple bells echoing faintly in the background.
Then, suddenly—she felt a hand on her shoulder.
A shiver ran down her spine. Her breath caught in her throat as an icy chill spread through her body. Terrified, she bolted inside, her heart pounding.

It took her a while to gather courage, but eventually, she stepped outside again, determined to confront whatever was out there.
That’s when she saw her.
The Spirit’s Confession
Sitting in the dimly lit veranda was a woman, her presence eerie yet sorrowful. My grandmother, though shaken, asked who she was.
The woman spoke in a soft, haunting voice:
“I came with you from there… you sat there, so I followed you.”
Her words sent a chill down my grandmother’s spine. Then, she told her story.

She had once been a young girl, but her life was cut short in a brutal act of violence. She had been raped and murdered at the very spot where my grandmother had rested. For years, she had wandered, lost, unable to find peace.
“I have been here for so long,” she whispered, “but no one has heard me.”
And just like that, she vanished into the night.
A Soul Set Free
Shaken, my grandmother rushed inside and told my grandfather everything. Being a pandit (priest), he knew what had to be done.
The next day, he performed the final rites for the girl’s soul, offering prayers and rituals to help her find peace.
From that day forward, the eerie presence near the Chatram was never felt again.
