Eye Donation Horror Story: Was the Patient Still Alive ?

One of my ophthalmology teachers told me this story, and this is kind of a medical horror story. According to him, this happened to him in the 90s. So, he was working on a laptop as a junior doctor in ophthalmology under a senior consultant in Delhi. They were on the team that handled the eye donation program, so they used to get calls from people and would drive down to those areas—rural areas around Delhi, sometimes in U.P.—to collect the specimens from deceased individuals.

The Call That Started It Al

Apparently, one fine day they got a call at around 10 in the morning. They were asked to provide their service for an eye donation. This call came from a rural area near U.P. They decided to drive down there. They reached around 12 o’clock and returned back around 2 o’clock or something.

Was the Patient Still Alive?

At around 7 o’clock, they received phone call. The person on the line said, “Doctor, from the body you took the eyes in the morning, bleeding has started from that place.”

The Funeral was still pending as person’s family were probably waiting for someone to arrive for the funeral, so the body was kept there—I think on ice blocks or something.

They were like, “How is this possible?” How can blood comes out from the dead body

The consultant asked the houseman, “Did you check the pulse of that dead body? I mean, did you check the vitals?”

Sometimes it happens that a person might not have a perceptible pulse but might still be alive—the pulse can be imperceptible or very faint. The houseman denied it. He said, “I didn’t check. I just trusted the relatives.”

The consultant got scared of the situation, but they had to go back and check.

When they reached, there was a crowd—like 100 to 150 people—outside the house. It was a rural area, and the consultant got scared thinking about how these people might react.

Investigation and resolution

So, they went to the body and saw that there was bleeding from the eyes. They checked the pulse and everything—it was a dead body.

Then they started thinking: when we took out the eyes, was the patient actually alive at that time?

Suddenly, the consultant asked, “Was this patient on some kind of medication?”

The relatives said, “Yes, they were taking medicines due to their condition. He was using blood thinners.”

So that’s why there was blood coming out.
